Letters & Epistles Paul Wrote to the Early Churches

Important Note

  • Paul wrote 13 letters total in the New Testament.
  • Some also include Hebrews, but its authorship is uncertain, so it’s usually not officially counted as one of Paul’s letters.

1. Major (Doctrinal) Church Letters

These are longer letters focused heavily on theology and doctrine.

  • Romans — Written to the church in Rome (Available on 4/8/2026)
  • 1 Corinthians — Written to the church in Corinth (Available on 4/8/2026)
  • 2 Corinthians — Written to the church in Corinth
  • Galatians — Written to churches in Galatia

2. Prison Epistles (Written While Paul Was Imprisoned)

These emphasize Christ, unity, and Christian living.

  • Ephesians — Church in Ephesus
  • Philippians — Church in Philippi
  • Colossians — Church in Colossae
  • Philemon — Personal letter, but connected to a church context

3. Early Church Encouragement Letters

These focus on encouragement, endurance, and Christ’s return.

  • 1 Thessalonians — Church in Thessalonica
  • 2 Thessalonians — Church in Thessalonica

4. Pastoral Epistles (Leadership & Church Order)

Written to individuals leading churches (not entire congregations, but still vital to early church structure).

  • 1 Timothy — Instructions for church leadership
  • 2 Timothy — Paul’s final letter, encouragement in ministry
  • Titus — Guidance for church organization
