What is my purpose?”

We search for purpose in careers, accomplishments, relationships, possessions, and recognition. These things may have value, but none of them can answer the deepest questions of the human heart. Our true purpose is not something we invent for ourselves. It begins with God—the One who created us, redeemed us, and calls us to participate in His work.

From a Pentecostal perspective, discovering our purpose involves more than gaining information about God. It means entering a living relationship with Jesus Christ, being transformed by the Holy Spirit, and becoming empowered to serve in God’s mission.

Our Quest Begins With God

Before we ever began looking for God, God was already reaching toward us.

The Bible teaches that human beings were created in the image of God. We were made to know Him, worship Him, reflect His character, love one another, and exercise faithful stewardship over His creation. Sin damaged that relationship, but it did not destroy God’s desire to redeem us.

Our search for purpose begins to make sense when we recognize that we belong to our Creator. We were not created merely to survive, collect possessions, or pursue personal success. We were created for God’s glory.

Paul writes:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.”
—Ephesians 2:10, ESV

Our good works do not earn salvation. Instead, they flow from the new life God has already given us through Christ. Purpose is therefore not the price of salvation; it is one of salvation’s results.

What Has God Offered Us?

God has offered us far more than temporary happiness or earthly success. In Jesus Christ, He offers us forgiveness, reconciliation, new life, the presence of the Holy Spirit, a place in His family, and eternal hope.

1. God Offers Us Salvation

The greatest gift God offers is salvation through Jesus Christ.

Because of sin, humanity stands separated from God. We cannot repair that separation through morality, religious activity, or human effort. Jesus took our sins upon Himself, died on the cross, and rose bodily from the grave. Through repentance and faith, we receive forgiveness and new life.

Salvation is not simply escaping punishment. It is being reconciled to God and restored to the purpose for which we were created.

When we come to Christ, our past no longer has the final word over us. Our failures do not define our future. In Christ, we receive a new identity.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV).

2. God Offers Us the Presence of the Holy Spirit

God does not save us and then leave us to live the Christian life through our own strength. He gives us the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, leads us toward Christ, brings about the new birth, lives within believers, develops spiritual fruit, guides us into truth, and empowers us for service.

Pentecostal faith emphasizes that Christianity is not merely a belief system. It is a Spirit-filled life. We are called to know the reality of God’s presence and to depend upon the Spirit every day.

Jesus promised His disciples:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.”
—Acts 1:8, ESV

This power was not given so that believers could appear spiritually important. It was given so that they could become faithful witnesses for Jesus—in their homes, churches, communities, and throughout the world.

3. God Offers Us Spirit-Empowered Purpose

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit filled the waiting believers and empowered them to proclaim the works of God. Pentecost reveals that God’s purpose includes every believer, not merely pastors, teachers, or missionaries.

The outpouring of the Spirit crossed boundaries of age, gender, social position, and nationality. Sons and daughters would prophesy. Young and old would be used by God. The promise of the Spirit was extended to all whom the Lord calls.

The baptism in the Holy Spirit is an empowerment for Christian life, worship, service, and witness. It should produce greater surrender to Christ, deeper love for others, increased boldness in sharing the gospel, and a greater desire to glorify God.

Spiritual power must never be separated from spiritual character. The Spirit who gives gifts also produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Your Gift Is Connected to Your Purpose

God has not called every believer to perform the same assignment. The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts according to His will.

First Corinthians 12 teaches that the Church is one body with many members. Every member is valuable, and every Spirit-given gift has a purpose. Some believers are called to teach, some to lead, some to encourage, some to serve, and some to exercise other gifts of the Spirit. No faithful service should be considered insignificant when it is performed in obedience to God.

Your purpose is not found by comparing yourself with someone else. It is found by surrendering your life to Christ and faithfully using what the Spirit has entrusted to you.

Spiritual gifts are not trophies demonstrating personal greatness. They are divine enablements given for serving others and building up the body of Christ. First Corinthians 13 places love at the center of their operation. Gifts without love can become noise, pride, or confusion. Gifts guided by love strengthen the Church and point people toward Jesus.

Purpose Is Larger Than a Position

People sometimes believe they have no purpose because they do not hold a title or stand behind a pulpit. But purpose is much larger than a church position.

You can fulfill God’s purpose by praying for someone, encouraging a discouraged believer, teaching Scripture, caring for the suffering, serving your family, sharing the gospel, defending truth with love, or faithfully completing an unnoticed act of obedience.

Our calling begins with belonging to Christ. Before God calls us to a particular task, He calls us to Himself.

We are called to:

Love God completely.

Follow Jesus faithfully.

Walk in holiness.

Love and serve others.

Build up the Church.

Use our spiritual gifts.

Proclaim the gospel.

Make disciples.

Live as witnesses to the power of Christ.

Remain faithful until Jesus returns.

Our specific assignments may change throughout life, but our central calling remains the same: glorify God and participate in His mission.

Seeking Purpose Through Prayer and Surrender

Purpose is usually discovered through obedience, not through waiting for a complete explanation.

Abraham had to go before he knew every detail of the journey. The disciples had to leave their nets and follow Jesus. The believers in Acts had to pray and wait before receiving power to carry the gospel to the nations.

If we want to understand our purpose, we should begin by asking:

“Lord, what have You already commanded me to do?”

We should search Scripture, pray earnestly, listen for the Spirit’s direction, seek wisdom from mature believers, recognize the gifts God has given us, and remain attentive to the needs around us.

God’s guidance will never contradict His written Word. The Holy Spirit who inspired Scripture does not lead believers contrary to Scripture. Genuine spiritual direction will exalt Jesus, agree with biblical truth, produce godly character, and contribute to the good of Christ’s body.

Purpose Can Continue Through Suffering

Seasons of illness, disappointment, grief, weakness, or limitation can make us question our usefulness. We may wonder whether our purpose has ended because we cannot do everything we once did.

But God’s purpose is not canceled by human weakness.

The resurrection of Jesus assures us that suffering and death do not have the final word. Even during seasons when our activities are limited, we can still pray, worship, encourage others, speak truth, demonstrate faith, and bear witness to the sustaining grace of God.

Sometimes our greatest ministry comes not from displaying our strength but from showing others that Christ remains faithful in our weakness.

The Purpose of Our Purpose

Ultimately, our purpose is not about making ourselves known. It is about making Jesus known.

The Holy Spirit does not draw attention away from Christ. He glorifies Christ. Therefore, a truly Spirit-led life will point people toward Jesus—His cross, His resurrection, His saving power, His lordship, and His coming kingdom.

God has offered us forgiveness instead of condemnation, reconciliation instead of separation, new life instead of spiritual death, power instead of helplessness, belonging instead of isolation, and hope instead of despair.

He has offered us Himself.

Conclusion: The Quest Becomes a Calling

The search for purpose ends where surrender begins.

We do not find our deepest purpose by looking only within ourselves. We find it by looking to Jesus. When we repent, believe the gospel, receive new life, yield to the Holy Spirit, and obey God’s Word, our quest becomes a calling.

We are saved by Christ, filled with the Spirit, joined to His Church, gifted for service, and sent into the world as His witnesses.

The question is no longer only, “What do I want to do with my life?”

The better question is:

“Lord, what do You desire to accomplish through the life You have given me?”

When we place our lives completely in His hands, we discover that our purpose is not merely something we seek. It is something we receive, live, and fulfill through the power of the Holy Spirit.

A Prayer for Purpose

Heavenly Father, thank You for creating me, loving me, and offering me salvation through Jesus Christ. Forgive my sins and help me surrender every part of my life to You. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and empower me to be a faithful witness for Christ. Show me the gifts You have placed within me and teach me to use them with humility, love, and obedience. Guide my steps, strengthen me in times of weakness, and let my life bring glory to Jesus. Use me to serve Your Church, reach the lost, and accomplish Your will. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Copyright Notice © 2025 Dr. Cecil W Thorn, Ph.D. (Theology).
