Conversations often become polarized before they even begin. Throughout history, racism has caused tremendous suffering, injustice, and division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scholars often describe racism as operating on four levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Internalized racism<\/strong> \u2013 accepting stereotypes about one&#8217;s own race or another race.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interpersonal racism<\/strong> \u2013 discrimination or prejudice between individuals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Institutional racism<\/strong> \u2013 policies or practices within organizations that result in unequal treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Structural racism<\/strong> \u2013 broader historical and societal patterns that contribute to unequal outcomes across institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognizing these concepts helps us understand why conversations about race remain important. Yet understanding racism should not become an excuse to judge people solely by the racial group to which they belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Danger of Replacing One Form of Judgment with Another<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History teaches us that judging people by race is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was wrong when people assumed someone was inferior because of their skin color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is equally wrong when we assume someone&#8217;s beliefs, motives, character, or moral worth simply because they belong to a particular racial or ethnic group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prejudice is still prejudice, even when it changes direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we begin assigning guilt or innocence based solely on race, we move away from justice and toward another form of stereotyping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Character Is What Defines a Person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Character cannot be inherited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cannot be determined by ancestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is revealed by our choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Honesty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Integrity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Compassion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Humility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Courage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Personal responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These qualities exist in every nation, every ethnicity, every language, and every culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, selfishness, dishonesty, hatred, violence, greed, and prejudice can also be found in every race and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No race has a monopoly on virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No race has a monopoly on vice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every human being is capable of both good and evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognizing this reality allows us to see individuals instead of stereotypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Bible Says<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bible consistently points us toward judging people by their heart rather than outward appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.&#8221;<br>\u2014 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James warns believers against showing favoritism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.&#8221;<br>\u2014 James 2:1 (ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Apostle Paul reminds Christians that our identity in Christ transcends ethnic divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There is neither Jew nor Greek&#8230; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Galatians 3:28 (ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These passages do not erase our cultural backgrounds. Instead, they remind us that every person bears the image of God and deserves equal dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognizing Progress While Continuing the Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our society has made remarkable progress over the past several decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laws have changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educational opportunities have expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many barriers that once existed have been removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet racism has not disappeared entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are still individuals who harbor prejudice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are still people who experience discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acknowledging these realities does not mean we must define every interaction through the lens of race. We can recognize both progress and remaining challenges at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How We Can Shift the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we want future generations to live in a less divided society, we must intentionally change how we relate to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. See Individuals First<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid assuming someone&#8217;s beliefs, values, or intentions because of race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every person has a unique story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Build Real Relationships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friendships across cultural backgrounds reduce stereotypes far more effectively than arguments on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are much harder to stereotype once we truly know them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Practice Humility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all have blind spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening respectfully does not require agreeing with every opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires recognizing that we can always learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Reject All Forms of Prejudice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether prejudice is directed toward minorities, majorities, immigrants, or any other group, it should be rejected consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Justice requires equal standards for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Teach Character Early<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents, teachers, churches, and community leaders should emphasize virtues like honesty, kindness, responsibility, forgiveness, and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Character education creates better citizens than teaching children to divide themselves into competing groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Celebrate Cultural Differences Without Creating Division<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cultures contribute beautiful traditions, food, music, language, and history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can appreciate diversity without allowing it to become a source of hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Anti-Racism Can Look Like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations such as the United Nations encourage combating racism through education, listening to those who experience discrimination, challenging prejudice, and supporting fair policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of these principles can strengthen communities when they are applied consistently and fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-examination helps us recognize our own biases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening helps us understand experiences different from our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking against prejudice helps prevent hatred from spreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporting equal opportunity promotes fairness for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These efforts are most effective when they are rooted in a commitment to equal human dignity rather than assumptions about entire groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future We Should Pursue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a society where introductions begin with names rather than labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where children are taught to admire honesty more than appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where employers evaluate competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where neighbors extend kindness before suspicion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where disagreement does not become hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This vision is not color-blindness. It is recognizing that our shared humanity is greater than our differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Race is one aspect of who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Character determines who we become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fight against racism is not won by creating new divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is won by refusing to judge people by categories and choosing instead to evaluate each person by their actions, integrity, and character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good people exist in every race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad people exist in every race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History demonstrates both realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our challenge is to stop assuming the best or the worst based on appearance and instead recognize the unique worth of every individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Martin Luther King Jr. expressed so memorably, the goal is that people &#8220;will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That vision remains as relevant today as it was when he first spoke those words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Copyright Notice \u00a9 2025 Dr. Cecil W Thorn,\u00a0 Ph.D. (Theology)<\/em><\/strong><em>.
