Introduction

In the New Testament, the word worthy does not mean earning salvation or proving ourselves righteous before God. The message of the gospel is clear — salvation is a gift, freely given by God’s grace and received through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV). No amount of human effort, religious performance, or good works can make us deserving of God’s love or forgiveness. Christ has accomplished that for us through His life, death, and resurrection.

Instead, being “worthy” in the New Testament speaks of living in a way that reflects the calling we have received in Christ. It is about walking in a manner consistent with the grace we’ve been given, the kingdom we belong to, and the mission we carry as God’s people. Paul often urged believers to “walk worthy” of their calling (Ephesians 4:1 (ESV); Colossians 1:10 (ESV); 1 Thessalonians 2:12 (ESV). This was not a demand for perfection but a call to alignment to bring our daily lives, choices, and attitudes into harmony with the identity and purpose God has given us.

To be worthy, then, is to live as citizens of God’s kingdom while still on earth. It means showing, by the way we speak, act, and love, that we belong to Christ and are led by His Spirit. Worthiness is not about achieving God’s favor but about responding to it. It is gratitude in action a life of obedience, humility, holiness, and love that points others back to Jesus.

This perspective shifts the focus from striving to earn something to walking in the reality of what we have already received. We are not trying to be worthy of God’s love Christ has already made us His own (Philippians 3:12 (ESV). Rather, we are called to live lives that are worthy of the gospel (Philippians 1:27 (ESV), showing the transforming power of God’s grace at work in us.

Return to Table of Contents

Table of contents

Introduction

Opening Question

Scripture Study

A. Worthy of the Gospel Calling

B. Worthy of the Kingdom of God

C. Opening Question

When you hear the word “worthy,” what comes to mind? Do you think of deserving, being good enough, or something else?

Answer:
When I hear the word worthy, my first thought is often “deserving” or “being good enough.” In everyday language, we usually connect worthiness with performance, achievement, or merit — for example, being worthy of an award, recognition, or trust. But in the Bible, worthy carries a different meaning. It’s not about trying to prove ourselves or earn God’s approval. Instead, it’s about living in a way that reflects who God is and what He has done for us.

Through Christ, we are already accepted and loved by God, not because we deserve it, but because of His grace. So when Scripture calls us to “walk worthy,” it isn’t demanding perfection or self-righteousness. It’s an invitation to live consistently with our identity in Christ — to let our words, actions, and character reflect the gospel. Worthiness, then, is less about achieving something and more about aligning our lives with the truth of who God has made us to be.

Return to Table of Contents

3. Instead, Paul emphasizes that worthiness is about alignment — living in a way that reflects the transforming power of the gospel we claim to believe.

Unity – In several letters (Ephesians 4:1–3; Philippians 1:27), Paul urges believers to “stand firm in one spirit” and be “eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Worthy conduct shows itself in how we treat one another in the body of Christ. When Christians walk in love, forgive each other, and work toward unity, they display the reconciling power of the gospel to the world.

Humility – Paul consistently connects humility with Christlike living (Philippians 2:3–8 (ESV)). To be “worthy” means choosing the posture of Christ, who humbled Himself even to the point of the cross. This humility is not weakness but strength under God’s control — serving others, putting their needs above our own, and resisting pride.

Steadfastness in the Faith – A life worthy of the gospel is also marked by perseverance. Paul encouraged believers to remain “steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58 (ESV)). Hardship, persecution, and trials become opportunities to show that our hope is firmly anchored in Christ. Worthiness is revealed when believers remain faithful in their witness despite opposition.

In short, Paul paints a picture of worthiness as living out the gospel in relationships, attitude, and endurance. It is less about perfection and more about consistency — showing with our lives the same grace, humility, and unity that Christ has shown us.

Takeaway:

Living a life “worthy of the gospel” is not about earning God’s favor but about reflecting the transformative power of Christ in daily life. Jesus’ Teaching on Worthiness

Matthew 10:37–38 (ESV)

“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me…”

Writer’s Explanation:

In Matthew 10:37–38 (ESV), Jesus confronts the deepest loyalties of the human heart. Family relationships—such as with parents, children, or spouses—are among the strongest bonds we experience in this life. Yet Jesus declares that love for Him must surpass even these. This does not mean we stop loving or honoring our families (since Scripture elsewhere commands us to do so), but it means our devotion to Christ must be ultimate.

To be “worthy” of Jesus, then, is to recognize that He is not one commitment among many—He is Lord above all. Following Him requires surrender of competing loves and the willingness to take up one’s cross, which symbolizes a daily death to self, pride, and worldly attachments.

In practice, this teaching calls us to evaluate what or who holds first place in our lives. Are there relationships, possessions, or ambitions that rival Christ for our loyalty? Jesus insists that true discipleship demands full allegiance. He is not asking for part of our hearts but for all of it. Worthiness here is not about perfection but about priority—choosing Christ above all else, even when it is costly.

Ultimately, Jesus’ words remind us that our relationship with Him is eternal, while even the most cherished earthly ties are temporary.
